Heads up: Cost estimate based on national per-sqft pricing ranges plus a BLS state wage index and cause multiplier. Actual quotes vary with access, containment complexity, disposal fees, rebuild materials, and regional contractor supply. This is an educational range, not a bid. Always collect three written quotes from licensed, IICRC-certified remediators before hiring. Not legal, insurance, or financial advice.

FAQ

How accurate is this estimate?

Directional, not bid-ready. We use published per-sqft pricing ranges from the IICRC S520 community plus a state wage index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment Statistics (May 2023). Real quotes shift with access, disposal fees, rebuild material choices, and local contractor supply. Use the number to decide whether to spend on an inspection, not to sign a contract.

Is mold removal covered by homeowners insurance?

Sometimes. Most standard US policies cover mold when it stems from a "sudden and accidental" covered event like a pipe burst, but exclude mold from chronic humidity or unresolved leaks. Some states cap mold coverage or require a specific endorsement. Read your own policy and consult a licensed agent. Our general info guide has the common patterns.

Can I do mold remediation myself?

For surface mold under 10 sqft on a non-porous material like tile or sealed concrete, EPA guidance allows careful DIY cleanup with proper PPE (N95, gloves, eye protection). For anything larger, behind walls, in HVAC systems, or involving sewage water, call a licensed remediator. DIY on larger jobs can spread spores through the rest of the house and void insurance coverage.

Why does state affect the cost?

Labor is the biggest variable cost in remediation, and labor rates differ by state. Our state multiplier indexes your state's mean hourly wage for Construction Laborers (BLS SOC 47-2061) against the US mean of $22.75. California is about 1.35x the national average; Mississippi is about 0.75x. Same job scope, materially different price.
